Deacon’s Sharing
“Vancouver Son Run” – by Nicky Yuen
Last Sunday, I had the joy of running in my first ever Sun Run, which is a 10km run through downtown Vancouver. I am in no way a runner by any amount of personal interest, athletic gifting, or genetic predisposition, although I have been told numerous times, “You look like a runner”. Well, looks are most certainly deceiving, as by no mere coincidence do I avoid running – my response to that line is “I do everything BUT run”. My journey started off with a personal challenge which actually began last Summer when I was invited to go running with Eva and Joyce. Prior to that, the only running I ever did was in high school (Canada Fitness, 6 laps around the track), and running away from a bear while hiking … almost, but I was determined to improve my running endurance beyond several minutes of straight running! So this February, the opportunity to participate in an official training regimen at work resulted in me half committing myself to it, and maybe even trying the Sun Run for once. Throughout 12 weeks, at least 3 times a week, I used my lunch hour at work to follow a training schedule that would potentially enable me to run 10 kilometers with ease. Skeptical I was! But as the training progressed, through cold rain, snow, wind, mud, and a bit of sun, I found myself running further and further, and stopping less and less. I can only praise God for the ability of the human body to adapt to such physical stresses and strains, and to heal so quickly. I also thank Jesus for the ‘head songs’ He put in my head to keep me going. Fast forwarding to the end of the 12 week training program, I was running, at times, up to almost 12km, within an hour. This adherence to the training routine, which I eventually grew to enjoy, resulted in an unforgettable experience on April 17, when I stood among throngs of people in downtown Vancouver, taking in the excitement and hype, ready to put my training to the test and run the literal race of my life. Needless to say (and I’d be embarrassed if couldn’t), I finished the run! My training helped enormously, and I can only attribute my accomplishment to that, as I was able to pray, praise and even sing to Jesus, for this feat of human endurance. Yes, a great and glorious Son Run it was!
